This allows Physical Therapists to use dry needling for certain circumstances for their patients that can benefit from it. What is Dry Needling?
Dry needling is a technique that physical therapists use for the treatment of pain. During this technique, a dry needle is inserted into the areas of the muscle. The needle used in this therapy is a thin filiform needle that stimulates the underlying muscular tissues. This can then target the tissues that are not manually reached or easily accessible. It is a safe and sterile method that can bring effective results for managing pain with minimal discomfort.
Trigger point dry needling is used for tight muscle groups that are causing any stiffness and pain. These knots and muscle tightness can cause local or referred pain and restrict your range of motion. During this process, the physical therapist places needles near the trigger point in your tissue or muscle. Which can then, release those knots and relieve any muscle spasms or pain you may be having.
How Can This Benefit Me in therapy?
Dry needling is one of the effective ways of releasing pain while being minimally invasive. Instead of focusing on the general area of your pain, dry needling targets the origin point. Not only does it relieve pain but it also releases any inflammation and chemicals, which may be blocking the blood flow to the muscle.
It can overall help increase your range of motion that may be due to muscle tightness and knots. It can also help you recover, and speed up your healing process after an injury. Other conditions that this therapy can treat are jaw and mouth problems, including TMJ and TMD. It can also be beneficial for migraines and tension headaches. It can be very beneficial for those who have had persistent knots that cause extreme pain frequently.
There are some key things to look out for after your treatment. It can cause soreness after the treatment which can feel uncomfortable. However, your soreness will be gone after a few hours. You might also notice a small spot where the needle was pushed in which can sometimes cause very minor bleeding. We also highly recommend that if you are taking blood thinners or have recently had surgery consult a physician before coming in.
If you are having stiffness and muscle tightness, you may be able to benefit from dry needling therapy.
